High-fashion of the 90s

The ’90s was indeed the era of elegance and supermodels. During that era minimalism equaled luxury for some brands like ‘Calvin Klein’ who was incorporating more minimalist looks in his collections even in the late 80s.

The minimalist look made a lot of sense also because of the ambiance in the beginning of the decade- world power like the United States was in an economic slump, as well as the United Kingdom. So even if you had the money for luxury fashion, it looked tacky to flaunt it.

This era was also marked by the revival of the “retro look”. Basically every designer was doing their own version of ‘retro’-Christian Lacroix was doing 19th-century or a 1960s look to his work, while Vivienne Westwood incorporated 18th-century corsets in her collections. Jean-Paul Gaultier also did corsets and flapper dresses, while Gianni Versace used inspiration from baroque elements in his work.
